What Do Your Favorite Movies Say About You?

Sigmund Freud   Filmreel

Everyone has their list of their favorite films. The geekiest of us (yes, me) have a written list, or, (yes, me) even have a program to manage our movie library. (I use DVDPedia, which is very good.) Over at my favorite social networking site, Twitter, Chris Brogan posed a simple question this morning: What are your favorite movies. Well, I have my “top ten favorites” list. Here it is:

  1. Blade Runner
  2. Batman Begins
  3. Another Country
  4. The Broken Hearts Club
  5. Latter Days
  6. Donnie Darko
  7. Stargate
  8. Gattaca
  9. The Thomas Crown Affair (1999)
  10. The Matrix

So, what does this cinematic collection translate into? Well, there’s a lot of sci-fi fantasy, love stories, and super-human, strong hero types. And some quirkiness. I’d also say the majority of the movies are rather “dark.” And while there’s some violent content, it’s pretty minimal. I also think the stories are about hope, growth, and positive change. All in all, I’m pretty satisfied that my favorite movies represent me and some of my values rather well.

If you’re not a movie-geek, and don’t already have a written list of your favorite films, sit down and write one out. It should be a fun experience! Then, take a moment and analyze it. What are the major themes and genres of the movies on your list? Are you a lover, fighter, cowboy, warrior, politician, spy, soldier, artist? Are you your Top Ten List?

So, how are you doing? Well, after writing this, I did my research. (Always do your research first!) It seems CBS’ The Early Show beat me to it a few weeks ago. So, here’s their interesting take on how your favorite movies can reveal your personality type:

“In ”Cinescopes: What Your Favorite Movies Reveal About You,“ Ezra Werb and Risa Williams assert that your ten favorite movies show a lot about your personality, and more.”

They go on to reveal sixteen different personality types, including “Dedicated Idealist”, “Loyal Warrior”, “Existential Savior”, and “Passionate Maverick”. I confess, I think those four represent me fairly well. What about you? What do your favorite movies say about you?
