The New York Times Redesigns Front Page?
Did you wake up this morning and notice that The New York Times.com homepage looked a bit different? It looks like Apple bought the top banner, and a side banner as well. Which is not so much different, except that with just a big grey apple in acres of whitespace, it feels a bit empty. (The ad is animated, the image on the left is the beginning, the image on the right is the ending.) Also, the ‘Opinion’ and ‘Arts’ windows have moved lower - I’m assuming in order to accommodate the additional space for Apple. Also missing? The ads flanking “The New York Times” header. Did Apple pay for white space? Wondering if this is a permanent design change, or just taking advantage of additional advertising revenue for the Holiday season. Khoi?
Here’s a (frightening) glance back at The New York Times front page from November 27, 2003. It’s amazing what a good designer can accomplish. Khoi Vinh and his team at New York Times.com have done a great job, in a relatively short period of time. Thanks!
By the way, Vinh has a really impressive personal blog, Subtraction.
