Thirty-four year old, Yale and New York Universities-educated stand-up comedian Demetri Martin will star in his own Comedy Central TV show, “Important Things With Demetri Martin,” next year.

mediabistro.com reported the news yesterday, and took the opportunity to remind us that Jon Stewart’s production company, Busboy Productions, created the first Daily Show spinoff, The Colbert Report, who’s anchor, Stephen Colbert, “is one of our Golden Boa winners!”

While Demetri Martin is best-known for his appearances on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, he also has amassed a dedicated audience for his wry, intelligent standup work in comedy clubs. Comedy Central describes the new venture:

Totally awesome comedian and Daily Show Trendspotting correspondent Demetri Martin will have his own show on Comedy Central in 2008, produced by Jon Stewart:

“Important Things with Demetri Martin” is a stream-of-consciousness sketch and variety show… In each episode, Martin analyzes a single topic through the prism of his unique point of view. Topics covered might include everything from “What Happens After We Die” to “Apples.”“

Martin’s best work on The Daily Show, ”Professional Important News,“ an outgrowth of his ”Trendspotting“ reports, might still be viewable here. The segment explained the Viacom vs. YouTube lawsuit. Interestingly, Viacom, being the parent company of Comedy Central, was not informed of the segment prior to its airing. You can read an overview of the segment on National Journal’s Technology Daily.

You can see what it looks like when you can’t see the video, here, here, here, and here. You can see a 100% DMCA legal version of the ”Professional Important News“ here.
