Local Submarine Captain/Artist/Patriot Duke Riley Replays “One If By Land…”, Complete With English Queen.
**UPDATED: 11:22 PM**
Watch (a rather good quality) video of the event.
Brooklyn-based local “artist + patriot” Philip (Duke) Riley incurred the rath of the NYCPD and the Coast Guard yesterday morning as he and two “artistic accomplices” (according to the Times) elected to approach the highly-protected Queen Mary 2, docked in New York Harbor. Mr. Riley’s submarine, a hand-made replica of a Revolutionary War era craft, the Turtle, and his performance yesterday was a welcome story for a hot, steamy Friday, and certainly upstaged the larger Russian submarine story earlier in the week.
While this is not Mr. Riley’s first public performance to draw attention and ire from the City, it seems to be the least understood. Until we learn more about his motivation on this project, I leave you with a photography slideshow of the events, from The Times: Voyage of the Acorn, and a excellent collection of photographs chronicling an earlier voyage.
