Google Transit In Talks To Map New York City’s Subways

Google Transit, a “how-to-get-from-here-to-there” product from, yes, our friends at Google Labs, is in talks with New York’s MTA to develop an internet-based transit guide for New York City. Currently serving 15 cities in the U.S., plus Japan, I’m sure Google, which is now a Manhattan resident itself, will do a fine job helping us, as well as its own New York-based employees get around town. As someone who knows where the subways stop, but has forgotten how to get on one, I thought it would be interesting to investigate some current internet public transit sites for getting around Manhattan. Here goes:

  • HopStop.com Includes a mobile option. You can also “plan a trip with multiple destinations.” Widely reputed to be the best – at least for now!
  • Trips123.com Includes ticker of travel and transit alerts.
  • SubwayInfo.Com Can customize to your time (weekday, weekend, morning, noon, night,) and “least amount of walking.”
  • onNYturf All NYC subways PLUS the PATH train to New Jersey.
  • The MTA’s own Trip Planner includes fare and MetroCard (subway pass) information.
  • MTA Transit Service Alerts When you’re not sure where you’re going or how to get there, at least you’ll know IF you can get there.
